If you’re anything like us, your camera roll may be filled with hundreds (…thousands) of photos that will probably never see the light of day. Fotr is here to fix that. Fotr is an app that acts as an analogue camera in your iPhone. You buy film, take photos, and Fotr prints and mails the photos to your door. Sounds simple enough, right? Well hold up. There’s a catch. Fotr isn’t kidding around when it says it acts as an analogue camera.
Unlike regular iPhone photos, you don’t get to take 20 and decide on the best one later. The photos that you take in Fotr are the photos that are printed, making every shot an important one. This is great for two reasons.
One, it forces mindful photography. When you know the photo you take is the photo that prints, you put a bit more effort in the details. Two, it encourages creativity through the lens. Angles become more meaningful, lighting remains crucial, and subject matter begs to be memorable.
While Fotr may not be your everyday photography app, it’s a great option for an adventurous trip that you want to create lasting memories of. Fotr walks you through all of the steps to set up and buy your film so you can start snapping!
Buy your film
Since Fotr prints every photo you take within the app, you need to buy the film in advance. There are several options, ranging from $17 to $34. You can choose black and white or color, number of copies, sizes, and contrast levels. For this review, I chose to print 24 color 6×4” prints.

After taking my Fotr photos on an adventurous trip in Denver, Colorado, I was apprehensive about how they would turn out. Since you can’t see or edit your photos once you take them, you really aren’t sure what the final product will be. The website says to allow 10 days for delivery from the time your film roll is filled, and my prints arrived safe and sound within the 10 day period. When I opened the package, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well my photos turned out. The colors were vibrant even though I couldn’t edit them, and only a few were out of focus or dimly lit.
What are the pros?
Fotr brings back the sense of long-term photography. The photos that you take in Fotr are saved and printed, not just added into your never ending camera roll. My Fotr photos are going to be a beautiful memory of my trip to Denver that i’ll be able to physically look at and hold. Fotr is just as much about the process as it is about the tangible result. If you want a photography experience that pushes you to be in the moment, this is it.
Are there any cons?
The only photos that Fotr will print are the ones that you capture within the app. Remembering to open the app can be difficult or inconvenient.
If you enjoy control when it comes to photography, you may not love Fotr. You can’t retake photos (without using more film), review the photos you take, or edit the photos before they print.
How much does Fotr cost?
Fotr is free in the app store, and you pay for each roll of film you use. A roll of 24 frames of standard-sized photos costs $17 for black and white and $20 for color. More frames and larger photo sizes are available too. The price breakdown can be found here.
Where is the app available?
Fotr is currently only available on the Apple App Store.
If you like the idea of the photos you take living outside of your camera roll, try Fotr. Fotr is not an everyday photography app. However, using it on my trip gave me a chance to make memories that will live on my walls instead of my iPhone.
