“Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise.” – – – – – Some posts take on a life of their own. This is by far one of my most favorite shots from back in 2017, but recently it’s been taking over FB with some major geek pages sharing it. I have seen some with as many as 3,000+ shares. Granted, none of them gave credit, but I am glad I had the forethought to use a branded Scotch Trooper Glencairn for this very reason. That said, I wanted to share it again for a few reasons. First, for my newer followers who may not have seen it previously. Secondly, I really love telling the story of this shot. . A few years ago I was invited to SF to take a tour of Lucas Films and see some of the production of Rogue One. While in CA we made sure to visit @stgeorgespirits with @whiskywingo. The geek in me was already in heaven, then they showed us some of their barrels for future releases. One with a Millennium Falcon and another with Trogdor the Burninator. These were my people. As we were led through a tasting of previous releases, @genantagonist and I talked about an idea he had for a post that had a Stormtrooper spilling his whisky due to their infamous bad aim. I had been toying around with a similar setup but the perfectionist in me wasn’t happy with any of the test shots. So, with new excitement behind the idea, I tried a few new ideas… and here we are. No photoshop, no trick photography. This shot was taken as is with a whole lot of patience (and a clever crop). . I am not a fan of wasting whisky… but when the head distiller requests a particular shot. You make it happen. And very special thank you @chix.ology for setting this all in motion. #MayTheDramBeWithYou . . . . . #StarWars #Stormtrooper #Whisky #Whiskey #StGeorgeSpirits #ScotchTrooper #Scotch #AmericanSingleMalt

Tell our readers a little about you.

So, where to begin… I am Brett Ferencz, a Whisk(e)y drinker with a Star Wars problem. By day I am a Web Designer/Developer, but my love for photography, Whisky, and Star Wars has found a happy place in social media, mostly Instagram. I combine Toy Photography and Whisky to show a lighter side to a spirit and industry that can take itself too seriously at times. I am doing my part to make it more accessible and show that it doesn’t have to be a smug high luxury drink. But mostly, I am just having fun playing with toys and enjoying delicious Whisky.

How did you come up with the idea for Scotch Trooper?

It all really started as a joke. I had just had my first taste of Scotch at a Rush Concert and wanted to connect with other Whisky Enthusiasts. I had heard there was a large following in Social Media, so I created an account that would both show my main interest in Whisky but not come off too serious so no-one would think I knew what I was talking about. Since I am obviously a huge Star Wars fan, it seemed to be the perfect mix to combine the two.

Jyn: I love this whisky. Leia: I know. – – – – – As International Women’s Day approaches, there have been quite a few stories popping up all over the inter webs about women and whisky. While I am sure they all come from good intentions, some have just missed the mark. Women don’t need their own whisky or their own sipping glass. They already have been and continue to be a driving force in this industry. I have had the pleasure of meeting some amazing women in this industry ranging from Brand Ambassador to Master Distiller and each completely blow me away with their passion, dedication and all around knowledge in what unfortunately is still viewed at times as a “mans drink”. My friends over at @ourwhisky are working to showcase the diversity of whisky makers and drinkers by inviting women to tag your photos with #OurWhisky showing how and where you enjoy your whisky and they will repost it on their feed. Whisky is a drink that can be enjoyed by anyone. Are you a professional photographer?

I have been a freelance photographer for over 10 years now. I never pursued it fully but always had the passion for it. However, my love for whisky and photography has really found its home in Social Media as I am currently photographing whisky for a few other Instagram accounts. It’s bringing me to whisky tastings, VIP events and distillery visits. I couldn’t be happier.

What’s your favorite Star Wars movie and why?

I always go back and forth on this. I still think the best Star Wars film is the original, A New Hope. However, the first Star Wars film I saw in the theater (when I was 5) was Return of the Jedi. So that film will always hold a special place in my heart.

What’s your LEAST favorite Star Wars movie and why?

Episode 1 – Phanthom Menace… Jar Jar, that’s all I will say about that.

“NOOOOOOOO!” – – – – – First off, I wish I could tell you that no whisky was harmed in the taking of this shot, but that is clearly not the case. But let me explain. As I was setting up to take this shot all I had was a bottle and a few vague ideas. A few hours later, that was all I still had. I then got the idea to tie in a story about visiting @vadistillery last year and grabbed the sample of the delicious new make spirit I came home with. I tried a few shots of the trooper smelling it, trying to drink it. Again, none of those shots came out as I hoped. As I was brainstorming more ideas…. the bottle slipped from the Troopers hand and spilled all over the table. As I fought off the anger/frustration the light from the puddle caught my eye and I started to set a new layout. Needless to say, I am more than happy with the outcome. . About the whisky. It’s no secret that I love @vadistillery, so I was more than excited about their Chardonnay Cask release. I didn’t think they could top the Cider Cask release… but this one surely does. In my opinion at least. •Have you had the VA Chardonnay Cask yet? How do you think it holds up to their other releases? . . . . #VADistillery #VASpirits #StarWars #Stormtrooper #Scotch #Whisky #Whiskey #photooftheday #instagood #instadram #toyphotography #bourbon #alcohol #spirits #starwarsfigures #starwarsblackseries

Did you see Rogue One? What did you think?

I have seen Rogue One 3 times. And I love it. It’s not what I was expecting as a Star Wars film, it was a bit darker than I thought it would be, but loved it for that. Seeing it a second time really made it that much better. Once I could focus on the movie and not my own expectations I was able to relax and really enjoy it. Plus, one of my good friends worked on the film. So seeing her name in the credits at the end was kind of huge.

Are you using any of the cool new Storm Trooper types in your photography?

There were a few new Troopers introduced in Rogue One, I have used the new Death Trooper in a few shots, as well as the Scarif Trooper. But my favorite character to use from the new film is K-2SO. He stole the show in the movie, and is a hit in my photos.

What is your favorite Scotch?

That is a question I get often, but I never have a straight answer. It all depends on my mood and surroundings. But I say this, the Balvenie 12yr Double Wood is the whisky that transformed me from a Scotch Drinker to a Scotch Lover. It really opened my eyes to the high quality whisky that is out there.

What Scotch have you most often given as a gift?

I have bought the Laphroaig 10yr Cask Strength for almost everyone in my family at one point or another. You can’t really get any better (if you like smokey whisky) than Cask Strength Islay Whisky.

Any recommendations for people just starting to try Scotch?

There are so many whiskies out there with such a variety of flavors, aromas, and subtle differences. Don’t judge all of whisky based on something you tried once in college. If you try something you don’t like, make a note of it and try something else.

What Scotch would you recommend for making the prequels watchable?

Anything Cask Strength, you’ll need the extra alcohol content. But I will say, they serve their purpose in furthering a story. They don’t compare to the original Trilogy, but there are still moments in each that I still do love.

“Beep?” – – – – – And now for something completely different… but the same. Those who follow my Instagram Stories May have seen this already. It was a quick shot on my phone, but I loved it so much and got such a huge response that I thought it merited it’s own post. – – – Now onto the whisky: When @laphroaig and @simonbrooking throw a Burns Night tasting you know you are in for a treat. These cute little matchbooks were all @englishanj and I could talk about. Then they brought out the whisky filled chocolate truffles, those were a game changer to say the least. That is, until we were treated to a special tasting of the 1815 Legacy Edition and the 32yr. The latter of which we raised to @laphroaigjohn who couldn’t be there with us. Such a perfect ending to a glorious evening at the @rpbatlanta. That 32yr tho. How did you find out about Fracture?

In the past I have had some of my photos printed on a canvas. I loved the large format, but it lacked the detail and the pictures faded after some time. I was looking for something different and found Fracture from a Google Search. My prints turned out amazing, and look quite amazing on my office walls.

Any final thoughts before we go?

Just a huge thank you for this. I can’t tell you the amount of amazing people I have met along the way. I am beyond humbled by where things have come, and really excited to see what may be around the corner.

Thank you, Brett, for sharing this awesome Fracture story!
