Inspiring story of why you should print your photos!

Celebrating your stories. At Fracture, that is what we love to help you do. Recently, we were fortunate enough to help one customer celebrate his story and the beauty of life in an incredible way.

We could go on and on about the importance of printing and displaying photos. Father Brian Cavanaugh came to understand that importance after overcoming some of the worst trials life could have thrown his way. But from the darkest and lowest points, printed photographs were able to remind him of the immeasurable beauty life can also provide.

Who is Father Brian?

Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR a member of the Franciscan Friars, Third Order Regular, is currently assigned to Franciscan University of Steubenville (OH). He has been ordained a priest for 34 years.

In the spring of 2007, he made a pilgrimage with a number of fellow friars to Assisi and Rome. After the trip, Fr. Brian realized his interest in photography when helping another friar adjust and edit his photographs.

Dark Days

In early 2009, Fr. Brian was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The following months were filled with doctor appointments, tests and scans, a series of radiation treatments, and finally surgery.

Sickness takes an obvious physical toll on the body. Muscles become tired from spending so much time bedridden. The immune system weakens with each dose of radiation. Surgeries leave scars. Beyond this, the repercussions of sickness on the mind and the soul are nearly impossible to see. 

He was no exception to this. His thoughts became consumed by his sickness, and he worried if he would ever be healthy again. “Too quickly we jump to a dark lair of catastrophe and the fear-dragons; we tend to choke on our worries and anxieties.”

Bringing the Light Back

To combat the overwhelming worries and anxieties from the “fear-dragons,” he decided to print and frame his photographs. He hung them on the walls of his room in the friary. Surrounded by light and colors, the beauty of creation became a constant focal point for Fr. Brian.

A few inspiring photographs quickly grew to over 55 prints adorning the walls of Fr. Brian’s room. The visual joy these photographs brought helped him overcome the effects of his cancer on his mind and soul. And, after seven years, his doctors now deem his body cancer free.

Celebrating His Story

Fr. Brian learned about Fracture several years ago and was intrigued by our glass printing process. He ordered two Fracture prints which he thought turned out even better than advertised. The clarity of the colors gave an impressive 3D effect to the Fracture prints. Since the original order, he has ordered three additional Fracture prints, each one more remarkable than the last.

As an avid collector of words of inspiration, he has amassed 63 hand-written journals of quotations, illustrations, and stories. For 32 years he has published a monthly newsletter of inspiring quotes called “Apple Seeds.” 

An early inspiring quotation that hangs in his office is from Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe:

“Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.”
